From a young age, Tomas Schats has been passionate about creativity and sharing his ideas with the world. The starting point of his creative journey began at the Graphic Lyceum in Eindhoven, providing a solid foundation for his artistic skills. He continued his education at the Academy in Den Bosch (now known as St. Joost) and graduated in 2002, clearly marking a path of dedication to his art.

Schats is characterized by illustrations that are simple, with clean lines and minimal use of colors. Don’t be mistaken: simplicity doesn’t mean superficial, as his works always carry a deeper message. Tomas’s animation work can be admired with renowned names such as NRC and VPRO. For these companies, he sometimes steps away from his traditional simplicity and adds color to give his drawings more substance.

Approximately seven years ago, Tomas shifted his focus to spatial art, introducing a new dimension to his creativity. Some of his drawings called for a spatial translation because they didn’t fully come to life as flat illustrations. One of these translations is his work, the “Garbage Bin House,” a massive hybrid between a trash can and a house where visitors can dispose of their waste through the tilting roof. The “Garbage Bin House” will be exhibited at two notable events: Big Art in Rotterdam and the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. The latter event has even selected his work for a prominent spot on Kethelplein.

The “Garbage Bin House” is a playful nod and critique of our disposable society. The artwork can be entered via a small staircase and functions as a real trash can. It combines two ideas in one go: art with a message and interaction designed to make visitors contemplate.

This artwork is made of foam panels, reinforced with an internal structure. The finish with Acrylic One and triaxial fabric gives it a seamless appearance. For safety, the artwork is anchored on-site with anchor bolts into the ground.

Tomas is a big fan of Acrylic One due to its quick drying times and the natural, healthy nature of the material. He is even considering a full transition to Acrylic One. So far, he has not encountered any drawbacks in its use. His small sculptures are now also crafted with our material.

While Tomas’s work has its roots in the Netherlands, his influence extends beyond borders, especially with his illustrations. For the future, he dreams of more international recognition for his artworks. His collaboration with Seletti and the Dutch Design Week is a promising step in that direction. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for him!

1. CONCEPT
The competition, design and study phase of this project ran from summer 2018 to summer 2021, the work itself was realized from October 2021 until installation at the beginning of April 2022.

The statue shows a hand with three Conference pears. The hand symbolizes strength, balance and openness, while the graceful pears refer to the delicious fruit that is so characteristic of the ‘Haspengouwse’ landscape. It is a tribute to the hard physical labor on the land. Having participated in the pear picking myself for years, I have great respect for the labour, patience and trust required of the farmer.

2. STRUCTURE
The statue has an internal steel structure consisting of 14 square tubes welded together. All forces transfer to one central tube that is anchored to a concrete foundation sole by means of a foot plate. The weight of the total work is approximately 2 tons. The total height from ground level to the top  is +/- 5.5 mtr.

Because the work could not be made on site, a steel auxiliary construction had to be provided for sufficient strength during transport and assembly. The construction was provided with removable lifting eyes, mounted on the position of the stems. After transport and assembly, the construction was removed and the stems could be attached and finished at the location of the lifting eyes.

3. EPS MODEL
The EPS model is based on a 3D scan of a real hand with pears. The digital model was machined to a 22:1 scale from large EPS blocks with a density of 25kg/m3. The model was divided into several separate modules that could be placed around the steel structure using numbering and a laying plan. An offset of approximately 1cm was provided in the EPS blocks around the steel structure, which was mainly necessary to compensate for the difference between the digital computer model and the hand-welded steel skeleton. The modules were glued together with a light-foaming PU glue. The seams were then repaired with a light shrink-resistant renovation paste.

4. LAMINATE WITH A1
After assembly of the EPS modules, the work was laminated with three layers of A1 reinforced with a triaxial fabric 150gr/m2. Sufficient drying time was chosen between application of the layers so that irregularities could be sanded smoothly. The layers of triaxial fabric were staggered from each other. A small amount of thickener (Thix) in each layer of A1, resulted in a slightly less runny composition which made it easier to use. As the fourth layer, the triaxial fabric was replaced with fine dried quartz sand with M32 grain, weighing identical to the weight of A1 Liquid.

5. FINISHING, TRANSPORT & INSTALLATION
The pears were painted with a moisture-resistant and vapour-permeable matte paint, applied by roller. A sponge technique was used to obtain the colour nuances that are so typical for the Conference pear.

After painting the pears, the hand was finished with a final layer of A1 to which, in addition to quartz sand, a small amount of black pigment was also added to obtain a concrete look.

A two-layer sealer, diluted with water, served as a finishing touch. To add a little more shine, a satin sealer was chosen for the pears. For the hand, a matte sealer was chosen. With the first coat of sealer and adding black pigment to the mix the hand received depth and perspective. The stems, printed in a bioplastic based on maize starch, were also provided with a three-layer triaxial fabric (150gr/m2), painted in two layers and finished with a double satin sealer. A paintable moisture-resistant kit between pears and stems ultimately ensured an almost seamless transition.

The objects are made of a two-component material consisting of mineral powder and water-based acrylic resin. The material is cast in several layers of different thicknesses and sizes. This layering becomes visible through the use of the CNC milling machine. By creating a repeating 2D pattern, using different milling tools and entering different depths, a visually interesting experience is created.

In this project Malou Weijs looked for the possibilities to create a small moment of wonder. Because of her fascination for dynamic moments in our daily lives She started working with different materials and techniques that can have the same feeling when coming together. Texture and use of colour form the basis for this research and are influenced by the natural light and the position of the observer. This interaction of elements plays with perception and triggers curiosity and interaction with the object.

Vincent Snijders describes his project as follows: Gathering is a ritual that used to take place around a campfire. Now it occurs through ones and zeros, cables, chips and frequencies. Mouse, keyboard and screen have become ceremonial objects for uploading our consciousness to a digital realm. The journey passes through server rooms, data centers and cloud storage space during the data transfer procedure. ‘Cloud Interface Ceremony’ is an immersive experience that explores our relationship with new technology. Acting as a meeting point between us and the flows of information we engage with, it reveals what happens behind our screens. Digital tools and networks extend our bodies and minds, Plugging our lives into an ecosystem of connectivity. Sit down, put on the VR headset and let the ceremony commence.

How it’s made:

  • laminating on pieces of foam that have been CNC machined for strength
  • cast in a silicone mold (solid)
  • in silicone mold laminated with fiberglass mats (hollow)
  • support mold made to support the large silicone mold for the seat
  • for anchoring the metal frame in the foot of the sun lounger
  • as a filler with thixotropic
  • graphite powder for coating

The Groninger Museum invited Studio Maky to join their new exhibition Kinderbiënnale 2021. This is Netherlands’ first ever Children’s Biennale, a large interactive art exhibition made for and by kids.

Through several workshops and out of all the creative ideas of the children, the floating art installation BathCat and Guppy was born. The basis of this floating object is EPS with different layers of A1 and A1 Triaxial fibre.

Studio Maky build the installation in Rotterdam, but the last part of painting the cat they did with the help of the children in Groningen.

The 3,5 meter floating cat with scuba diving glasses and his fishy friend will be seen on the outside of the Groninger Museum, happy floating in the water, until January 9 2022.
